The game is very addictive and quite fun, with each new prison adding in new subtle elements that you will need to understand in order to successfully pull off your escape. You can't simply beat up all the guards and walk out the front gate, you will need to strategize, craft vital items such as weapons, copies of keys for gates, as well as tools to help with your escape. However, in order to escape each prison there are numerous ways in which it can be done, all of which will require a large amount of planning to pull off. The gameplay is very straightforward with simple controls and linear movement. The game has many RPG qualities, including player stats, side quests and the ability to craft an array of items.

You can build your player stats which will help you beat up guards and inmates, as well as allow you to craft various items that will help with your escape from each prison. Players will need to follow the routine of the prisons by attending roll call, partaking in jobs to earn cash and helping fellow inmates with tasks. You take on the role of an inmate and must successfully escape from six different prisons, each more difficult than the last. The Escapists is a top down 8-bit puzzle role-playing game developed by Mouldy Toof Studios.
